Gift idea

No food today. In fact, not even a very long post. But I want to write about the gift Mr. Other P and I made for Bridie's birthday.

I wanted to buy her a cake stand. Cake stands are good gifts. You would never buy one for yourself, would you? The trouble is that they can be expensive. Or ugly. Or even ugly and expensive. Just like when you go shoe shopping, and look for the perfect shoe that you've visualised in your mind's eye, but never find it, shopping for a cake stand can be difficult.

So we made our own, using craft glue and some vintage blue and white china plates and sherry glasses we found in a charity shop. I'm not pretending that this was an original idea - I've heard of this being done before. But I think the end result is really good. This will look great bedecked with cupcakes, or sandwiches for afternoon tea.

If you fancy giving this a go... Use strong glue! And make sure all surfaces are clean and dry before gluing.

  2. Jenn - thanks for the comment! She did say she was really pleased, but I feel a bit bad, because she lives in Belgium and had to take it all the way back with her!

Cee - I wish I came up with it! But thanks :)

Vegetable Matter - It can be yours. I'm a wannabe crafter, and even I managed!

  3. What's the midsection, drinking glasses? I think this is very neat! I have an old iron cake stand I got at Thrift but leans to one side and looks ridiculous. :-/

Did you use cement glue? I am asking all these questions because clearly I really wish to make one!

  4. Mae - I used a regular all purpose glue. But this was a mistake. the joins became loose after washing. I just heard this from Bridie's sister.

However all is not lost: Bridie has something called 'button glue', which is REALLY strong, and it has been fixed. I think if you go for something that is meant to stick porcelain, you'll be fine.

I want you to make one. I want you to make one and take pretty photos of it and post it on your blog!

(And I know for a fact that you have lovely plates to do it with. I have seen them in your fig biscuit photos!)

  8. What a great idea and very well done! You're right - a cake stand is something you never buy for yourself, but are always thrilled to receive as a gift (as long as it isn't one of the ugly ones).

  9. Oh man, I AM the kind of person who would buy a cake stand for themselves :$ *hides face in shame* If only I had the money. Does that make it even sadder? This is such a good idea though, really creative! Good stuff!

  10. "Button glue"?? I've never thought a glue could sound "cute", but I'm proved wrong.

  15. I was just gifted a lovely glass lipped pedestal cake plate with lid (yay at last a cake stand I can leave the cake on). Before this though, I had five (Gadz, now I have six?) cake plates, and I'm afraid I bought two of them for myself. Of course if I had clever crafty family or friends like you Mr P, I wouldn't have needed to;)
